Dexcom, a global leader in medical device manufacturing, operates a critical production facility in Athenry, County Galway.
As a manufacturer of life-saving medical technology, their operations require absolute reliability and continuous power supply.
Any disruption to their manufacturing processes could have serious implications for production schedules and the patients who depend on their devices.
With Ireland’s ambitious climate action targets and the growing need for energy security, Dexcom recognised the opportunity to lead by example.
They sought a solution that would not only reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs but also provide the resilience needed to keep their critical facility operational under all conditions.
Dexcom faced multiple challenges that required a sophisticated solution.
Their manufacturing facility demanded unwavering power reliability – any interruption could halt production of critical medical devices and impact patients worldwide.
High energy consumption meant substantial operational costs that would only increase with rising electricity prices across Ireland.
Beyond the immediate operational needs, Dexcom was committed to advancing their global Net Zero targets while maintaining the highest standards of manufacturing safety and efficiency.
They needed a system that could reduce their energy requirements significantly while providing backup power capabilities to protect against grid instabilities and outages.
The scale and complexity of the project presented its own challenges. Dexcom required one of Ireland’s largest rooftop solar installations, combined with advanced battery storage and backup generation – all integrated seamlessly to work as a single, reliable system.
Ohk energy designed and delivered a groundbreaking integrated energy system for Dexcom – one of the most sophisticated energy resilience projects ever deployed at an Irish manufacturing site. Our team managed the full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) across three cutting-edge technologies.
The solar installation itself represents one of Ireland’s largest rooftop projects. We installed 2,016 high-efficiency solar panels (620W each) across Dexcom’s roof, creating a 1.25 MW solar PV system.
However, the solar array is just one element of this project. Ohk energy integrated the solar system with long-duration battery storage and two HVO biofuel generators, creating a fully integrated 11.25 MW onsite power system. This blended technology approach ensures Dexcom’s facility remains operational under all conditions, whether during grid outages, peak demand periods or maintenance windows.
Our electrical design team worked closely with Dexcom to create a system that delivers both immediate benefits and long-term resilience. The entire project represents a multimillion euro investment in Ireland’s renewable infrastructure and sets a new benchmark for industrial energy solutions.
The integrated system reduces Dexcom’s energy requirements by 30%, translating to substantial cost savings with a payback period of just 2.5 to 3 years.
Beyond the financial benefits, the system delivers critical operational advantages. Production schedules are now protected against power disruptions, safety is improved through reliable backup systems and energy costs are more stable. This predictability allows Dexcom to focus on their core mission of manufacturing life-saving medical devices, but now with energy uncertainty minimised.
The project directly advances Dexcom’s global Net Zero commitments while supporting Ireland’s climate action targets. By demonstrating what’s possible with integrated renewable technology, Dexcom has shown that large-scale industrial facilities can greatly enhance both sustainability and resilience, cost-effectively.
Dexcom chose Ohk energy because they needed Ireland’s leading renewable energy installer for a project of this scale and complexity. As Ireland’s largest renewable energy installer, we had the expertise, experience and resources to deliver what has become one of the most sophisticated energy resilience projects ever completed in the country.
Our team’s ability to manage the full EPC process across three integrated technologies (i.e., solar, battery storage and biofuel generation) gave Dexcom confidence that their ambitious vision could become reality. From initial design through to execution, our electrical design team and on-site installation specialists worked with precision and professionalism to deliver a system that meets the exacting standards required for critical manufacturing operations.
The project showcases Ohk energy’s capability to deliver flagship renewable installations that unlock enormous value for Irish businesses, setting new standards for what’s achievable in industrial renewable energy and resilience.
